Online Benefits Brochure

Cleveland, OH – Cuyahoga County Employment & Family Services encourages residents to visit the website www.odjfsbenefits.ohio.gov to sign up for benefits online. Residents can apply for assistance and update their case information 24 hours a day from any available computer with Internet access. The process is quick, easy and secure. “We are providing access to the safety net of support available to families and individuals in need” said Employment & Family Services’ Administrator Dr. Richard Jones. “We are addressing emergency situations such as loss of job and income, with food and medical assistance.”

The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services has created a website that allows Ohioans to apply for cash, food and medical assistance. It allows recipients to complete a status verification report or to reapply for benefits, and make changes to their existing cash, food or medical assistance case. The status and history of the case is also available
to be viewed.

The process involves creating a user ID and password. The confidentiality of all information is strictly protected. The information is forwarded to Employment & Family Services and the applicant receives a confirmation number and email. An Employment & Family Services staff person contacts the applicant to verify the information and to
possibly schedule an interview.

For more information visit the Cuyahoga County Employment & Family Services website at www.employment.cuyahogacounty.us.

PechaKucha Night Cleveland #14 hits the Main Music Hall at House of Blues.

Launched in Tokyo in 2003, PechaKucha Night was designed as an event for young designers to meet, network, and present their work in public. It has blossomed into a worldwide phenomenon, with creative events happening in hundreds of cities around the world.

Drawing its name from the Japanese word for “chit-chat,” PechaKucha follows a now-familiar format called 20X20 — 20 images, 20 seconds each. The model ensures that the six-minute presentations will be concise and keep things moving at a rapid pace.

The 2012 PechaKucha Night Cleveland #14 hits the Main Music Hall at House of Blues on February 10 (8:20 to 10:30 p.m.). Previous events have taken place in the Higbee Building, at the Old Arcade, and the lower level of the Veteran’s Memorial Bridge. The first PechaKucha Cleveland event took place in 2008.

Cleveland’s relatively informal event will feature a succession of 10 to 12 artists or designers, each explaining their work, ideas, and passions as they regard to art, fashion, food, life, architecture, film, furniture, music, community, photography…

On the dance card so far is Meredith Hahn (Meredith and the Magic Sketchbook), Freddie Nova (I Need a Hero), Rick Turner (Cleveland Pop-Up Restaurant Revolution), Jeff Finley (Go Media, Weapons of Mass Creation), Nicole McGee (Plenty Underfoot), Carlton Jackson (Tunnel Vision Hoops) and Thomas Fox (Bad Racket Recording Studio).

As always, PechaKucha is free and open to the public. The doors open at 7 p.m. and the bars will be staffed.

“Whatever happened to . . .?” is a weekly series updating some of the most newsworthy and interesting local stories covered in The Plain Dealer. Have a suggestion on a story we should update? Send it to John C. Kuehner.

Today, we answer this question:

Whatever happened to bringing free WiFi Internet access to Cleveland’s Old Brooklyn neighborhood?
Nine months after holding the official launch party at the Estabrook Recreation Center, Kevin Kelleydeclares, “It’s working, and in some places it’s working very well.”

But in the same breath, the councilman, who represents Cleveland’s Ward 13 in the Old Brooklyn neighborhood, said that the hard work has just begun: tweaking the equipment so that every home and business in the 4.5-mile area receives an equally strong connection; and getting every resident, many of have been passed over by the Internet craze, to take advantage of the free service, which can cost more than $50 a month through a commercial provider.

“We want to become the most connected community in the United States,” Kelley said.

Crews are out in the neighborhood adjusting the equipment to boost the signal to problem households. (The fixes may require some additional equipment, Kelley said).

And Kelley has been out knocking on doors promoting the project, which includes free computer training by the Cleveland Housing Network and a refurbished computer for those who complete a 25-hour course.

“Only about half the people in Ward 13 have a daily Internet subscription,” Kelley said. “My goal is that every school-age child be able to get on the Internet for research, homework purposes, that every parent can communicate via email with their children’s teachers.

“Cleveland is kind of a paper-and-pencil town. But we have to change that, especially now that we have a different kind of economy, people communicate differently.

“If you are going to compete in this job market, you have to have a reliable Internet connection.”

Sixty-nine year-old Richard Varndell got connected in November. He works part-time at the airport but still manages to spend about three hours a day on the Internet, doing genealogy research, checking email and “putzing around.”

Varndell lives with his wife, Anne, in the 600-family Brooklyn Acres housing cooperative, where he said many of his neighbors are retired and living on a tight budget. For them, the free WiFi service makes connecting to the Internet possible.

“It works like a charm,” Varndell said. “This is just as strong and as fast as what I was paying $40 a month for. This is the best-kept secret in Old Brooklyn.”

Though Kelley conceived of the project, which he and others refer to as “The Greatest Project Ever,” he’s quick to point out that it’s a collaborative effort with the Cleveland Housing Network and the Old Brooklyn Development Corp.

The $1.3 million project is funded for the next five years, and Kelley said the group is trying to find a public-private business model to keep it going.

There are 23,000 residents in the neighborhood, and roughly 8,000 different people have logged into the service, according to Cleveland City Council spokesman James Kopniske. Usage is growing by about 20 percent a month, but that’s not enough for Kelley.

“It’s really the community outreach that’s going to make or break this,” he added. “We’re definitely making progress. But we want to get to the point where everybody can connect.”

2012 Call for Entries

This is Ingenuity – Be A Part of It
IngenuityFest is a festival of art, music, and technology. It’s also about finding and celebrating truly passionate and engaged people using every tool at their disposal to explore and create. We don’t simply bring two disciplines together; we highlight the creativity and innovation taking place at the edge of these worlds. This is where passions collide, where expertise mix, and the unexpected is born. Come be a part of Ingenuity. (Deadline for entries is 11:59 PM March 18, 2012)

What exactly is IngenuityFest?
IngenuityFest is a 3-day festival celebrating art, music, and technology. The festival this year will be held September 14, 15, and 16th in Cleveland, Ohio. Over 45,000 people attended the 2011 festival and 2012 will be our 8th Festival.

What We’re Looking For?
IngenuityFest presents a wide range of installations, performances, and demonstrations. We are looking for literally anything that meets our Selection Criteria including:

Large Installations

Gallery Pieces

Technology Demonstrations

Theater Performances

Dance Performances

Immersive Installations

Sound Installations

Sculpture

Video / Film

Multimedia

The Unexpected

What Spaces Will Be Available at IngenuityFest 2012?
Ingenuity changes its configuration year after year. No two Festivals are alike and we want to create a space for the wide range of performances, demonstrations, and installations. Ingenuity 2012 will include

An Ingenuity Art Gallery

A Digital / Internet Art Gallery

A Tech Innovation Demonstration Space

A Coffee Shop / Open Mic Style Stage

A Dance Space

A Black Box Theater

4 – 6 Installation Spaces

1 Jazz Stage

2 Large Performance Spaces

Room for several large to medium art pieces

Budgets
Ingenuity has no standard rates for projects. We ask that each creator submit a budget based on costs and fees. The bulk of our festival is made up of fees ranging from $100 up to $7,000. There are projects that we have funded at a higher level as well depending on the scope of work and reputation of an artist or performer.

Selection Criteria
Content for IngenuityFest is chosen through a process that uses objective scoring combined with subjective judgements by representatives from arts and technology fields. This group (typically a dozen people) scores each submission according to the curatorial criteria. A conversation typically follows to discuss scores and to balance selections with other entries.

2012 Selection Criteria
We’ve added to and changed the selection criteria – please read carefully. While all pieces at Ingenuity do not touch on all of these criteria, we look for pieces that touch on most of them.

Artistic Merit

Technology Integration

Interactivity

Educational Value

Innovation / Creativity

Incorporation of Theme (Feeds)

Demonstration of Ability to Execute Proposal

Need within Category

Knowledge of Work

2012 Theme: Feeds
People. Computers. Machines. Whether it’s food, water, electricity, or information, everything works, operates, and thrives on a feed.

What feeds us today? How do we view the food, information, culture and everything that nourishes the body, mind, and soul. Ingenuity is asking creative people of all kinds to examine feeds in every form imaginable. Read more about the 2012 Theme here.

First Annual Rube Goldberg Machine Contest
