CLEVELAND, Ohio — New York investment powerhouse Goldman Sachs wants to pump $15 million into Cleveland-area small businesses over the next five years to help them add jobs, increase revenue and become more business savvy.

Goldman Sachs and the Goldman Sachs Foundation have chosen Cleveland as the seventh city for its “10,000 Small Businesses” program that was launched two years ago and has rolled out in six cities so far. Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson will make the official announcement today.

The $15 million designated for this region will be aimed at established businesses poised to grow – not start-ups – but ones that may not have the skills or relationships right now to land venture capital or commercial loans.

Goldman Sachs will be working with Cuyahoga Community College, as well as local community and small business organizations.

Small business owners can apply for classes that be will offered starting this fall, or apply for grants or loans. The money isn’t meant to save a limping business, but rather is aimed at ones ready to break through.

“We’re not looking for brand new people (who haven’t) learned in the school of hard knocks,” Gary Cohn, Goldman Sachs’ president and chief operating officer, said in an interview Monday. “We’re looking for existing small business owners who’ve got an idea, who have gone through the heavy lifting and done a lot of the leg work to get to where they are now and we’re looking to take them from infancy to their teenage years.”

Dr. Jerry Sue Thornton, president of Tri-C, said it’s significant that Greater Cleveland has 51,000 small businesses with fewer than 100 employees.

“The fact that we had so many small businesses in our community was so impressive to [Goldman Sachs],” she said. “We’re very excited about Cleveland having this opportunity.”

Cohn said that the company is selecting communities that have been “great industrial capitals in the past.” It also is targeting areas with a notable workforce and regions where the program can have the biggest impact.

“The goal,” Jackson agreed in an interview, “is to create more success small businesses . . . and take people who have a natural tendency toward entrepreneurship or those who are working at it and help them be more successful than they are now.”

Goldman Sachs’ $500 million program is aimed at reaching 10,000 small businesses nationwide. The program is now operating in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Long Beach, New Orleans and Houston and will continue to expand to cities across the country

A key component of the program will be management/business classes at Tri-C through a curriculum developed by Babson College. Topics will include leadership, growth techniques, marketing tactics, preparing financial statements, hiring the right people and how to be bankable. The classes will generally be held every other Friday for three months.

In some of the other cities where the program is in place, there are distinct success stories: 50 percent of participating businesses are adding employees and 75 percent have increased sales.

Other partners in the program in Cleveland include the Council of Smaller Enterprises, JumpStart Inc., the Northeast Ohio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the Urban League of Greater Cleveland.

Jackson said he’s encouraged by the results in the other cities, adding, “This is a good fit for Cleveland. The partnership will take us a long way.”

“The thing where we’ve had the most success,” Cohn said, “is teaching small business people how to run a more effective and more efficient and more productive business.

“At the end of the day,” he said, “it’s about creating jobs and creating small businesses in America because we know that’s where all of the job growth comes from.”

To apply: Applications can be submitted at http://www.tri-c.edu/workforce/GoldmanSachs/Pages/default.aspx Small business owners are encouraged to apply immediately. The program will begin in September 2012.

CLEVELAND – Cleveland’s public transportation falls in line with some of the country’s top transit systems, making it fairly easy to ditch your car, a survey found.

A survey conducted by Walk Score , a website that scores homes and neighborhoods for walkability and life without a person vehicle, found that Cleveland ranked No. 14 – one step below Denver and several steps above other major cities like Dallas (16), Austin (21), Las Vegas (23), and Columbus (24).

“Transit Score measures how well a location is served by public transit by assigning a ‘usefulness’ value to nearby transit routes based on frequency, route type, and distance to the nearest stop on the route,” the Walk Score said.

The survey cited these Cleveland neighborhoods as being the most walkable, and included a score (out of 100) for each:

1) Downtown (88)
2) University District (77)
3) Ohio City (76)
4) Detroit Shaker (75)
5) Buckeye Shaker (73)
6) Goodrich-Kirtland Park (72)
7) Tremont (72)

Walk Score said 25 percent of Cleveland residents live in an area that has a score of 70 or higher.

Overall in the survey, New York landed the top spot, while Raleigh placed last in the 25-city ranking.
